Equipping Africa’s science that solves Africa’s developmental challenges

ASFI

Background & History

Background

Africa lags behind on nearly all key development indicators, with current trends offering little cause for optimism. Hunger persists, insecurity is rising, education quality remains low, and access to electricity and clean water is still limited. Meanwhile, the population is rapidly growing—projected to approach Asia’s by 2100—yet adequate development frameworks are neither in place nor clearly forthcoming. Still, the continent holds immense potential to become a major global player.

Science and academia—critical drivers of development—remain underprioritized in Africa’s development agenda. As UNESCO notes, science exists to generate solutions for everyday life, from health and food to energy and communication. No nation can achieve meaningful progress without value-driven, problem-solving research. Yet science can only thrive where scientists are well-trained, equipped, and supported with modern knowledge and skills. This is the driving vision of ASFI: to strengthen African science to address the continent’s pressing challenges. Only a robust and competent scientific ecosystem can transform Africa’s development trajectory.

In the immediate term, ASFI seeks to build capacity by equipping emerging African scientists with critical skills, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating platforms for knowledge exchange and innovation. These efforts aim to enhance research quality, increase problem-oriented scientific output, and strengthen networks across institutions and sectors. Over the long term, ASFI envisions a self-sustaining ecosystem of highly competent scientists driving locally relevant solutions, informing policy, and catalyzing sustainable development. By nurturing a new generation of visionary scientific leaders, ASFI aims to reposition Africa as a hub of innovation and resilience, capable of shaping its own development narrative and contributing meaningfully to global progress.

The ASFI Story

For many, 2020 is remembered as a year of disruption. The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped lives, restricted movement, and pushed the world into isolation. Yet, amid this global crisis, new ideas emerged, connections were forged, and seeds of innovation were planted. One of those seeds became the African Science Frontiers Initiative (ASFI).

Born in the midst of adversity, ASFI emerged with a clear mission: to transform African science and empower a new generation of researchers equipped to drive the continent’s development. What began as a simple idea—to connect and build capacity—quickly grew into a vibrant movement.

In early 2020, Prof. Bright Nwaru, ASFI’s founder, invited colleagues across Africa to join a free online course on systematic reviews and meta-analysis. From just over 100 applicants and fewer than 50 participants across 20 countries, a powerful community began to take shape. This marked the beginning of ASFI—a movement whose time had come.

Over the next five years, ASFI experienced remarkable growth. It trained more than 4,000 scientists across at least 45 African countries through capacity-building courses, seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs. Its monthly Science Seminar Series has run continuously, while career workshops, mentoring initiatives, and community-led platforms have fostered collaboration, learning, and professional growth.

ASFI also expanded its footprint through key initiatives. The Multidisciplinary Digital Conference and Boot Camp continues to create space for researchers to share ideas and collaborate. Digital platforms like ASFIScholar (https://asfischolar.org/home) and ASFIMeet (https://asfischolar.net/) strengthen connections across the continent and beyond. The launch of the ASFI Research Journal (https://asfirj.org/) provides an open-access avenue for scientific publishing, while the flagship 5–10 Program (https://africansciencefrontiers.com/5-10program.php) has begun building clusters of next-generation research leaders across African institutions.

From a modest beginning during a global crisis, ASFI has grown into a continental movement. Its impact is reflected in strengthened research capacity, expanded collaborations, and a renewed sense of purpose among African scientists. It has inspired not only skills development, but also a shared identity and commitment to advancing Africa through science.

As Prof. Bright Nwaru describes it, ASFI is more than an organization—it is a mission with a vision: to help build an Africa we can all be proud of.

The journey continues, but one thing is clear—the future of African science is bright.

Long live ASFI.
Long live African science.
Long live Africa.
